Meta, Facebook's parent company,  won court approval  to acquire VR startup Within Unlimited, defeating the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) effort to block the deal.   Meta announced its intention to buy Within Unlimited in 2021 as part of Meta’s big bet on  immersive virtual worlds, or metaverses .  The lawsuit is widely seen as symbolic of FTC Chairwoman Lina Khan’s opposition to the  expansion of big tech firms  through acquisitions. The antitrust lawsuit was the first under Khan against one of the “big four” technology giants. The FTC filed suit to block the deal in July, claiming it would lessen competition in the VR industry.   It is also suing Facebook, arguing it has  abused a monopoly position  in social media.
