Apple's personal computer shipment volume plunged by
40.5%
year over year in the first quarter (Q1) of 2023.
The disappointing performance came as global shipments of all personal computers slumped by 29%.
-
56.9 million
personal computers were shipped globally in Q1, 2023, according to data published on Monday by the International Data Corporation (IDC) and Canalys.
- Personal computer shipments in Q1 were down from the 80.2 million units shipped over the same period last year.
-
The poor results for the start of 2023 continued a longer trend. Global PC shipments in Q4 2022 were down
28.1%
compared to the same period in 2021.
- Apple saw the largest drop in shipments, followed by Dell Technologies which shipped 31% fewer PCs in Q1 2023 than it did over the same period in 2022.
-
The extended drop in PC shipment volumes
signals
"a temporary return to pre-COVID patterns," according to the IDC.
-
Apple and other personal computer makers saw a transitory
spike in demand
during the pandemic lockdowns as employees around the world were asked to work from home.
