Italy became the first country to ban ChatGPT on Friday.
The Italian data protection agency said that OpenAI, the company that developed the artificial intelligence chatbot, unlawfully collected personal user data.
- The Italian Data Protection Authority said that the ban was provisional "until ChatGPT respects privacy."
- The regulator referred to a March 20 data breach that exposed some ChatGPT conversations and the payment details of some users.
- It said that ChatGPT lacks an age-verification system to prevent minors from being exposed to adult content.
- OpenAI has 20 days to comply with the regulator's data requests and to offer remedies to the highlighted problems.
- The regulator said it could levy a fine of up to €20M (~$22M) ― approximately 4% of OpenAI's annual revenue.
- Earlier this week, more than a thousand leading technologists and A.I. researchers published a letter calling for a moratorium on the development of advanced A.I. systems until better safety policies are established.
